Annual Meeting
Planned Trinity’s next annual meeting was held after 9:30 a.m. worship January 29, 2012. Please plan on attending and making your voice heard.. Here is a copy of the 2011 annual report.
Trinity United & Sagrado Corazon Unite in Sunday School This year Trinity United and Sagrado Corazon will try a bold experiment – to share Sunday School! This cooperative ministry should strengthen both congregations and offer our community something unique – both English and Spanish worship offered weekly, with bi-lingual Sunday School in between, from 11 a.m. until noon. We hope to attract new families to our churches through this new opportunity. The first day of Sunday School was September 18.
We’ll need NEW EFFORT with this new effort, though. Members of all ages are encouraged to sign up to help with making a craft, bringing in cookies, sharing a Bible Story, or just loving our kids. You have gifts that are unique and wonderful. Please sign up in Larson Hall, and see Debbie Shaffer or Pastor Rich if you have any questions.
Ephesians Bible Study
Begins January 11 Ephesians is an invitation into a world of grace, sweeping us into an all-encompassing vision of God’s eternal plan to redeem all creation. For 4 weeks every Wednesday from 10 – 11 a.m., we’ll invite participants to a spirituality of knowing and living the peace of Jesus that is the destiny of the entire creation. Sessions will include: “Drawn into God,” “Jesus Is Our Peace,” “Knowing the Unknowable,” and “Imitating the Inimitable.” There is no cost, and friends are welcome.
Ash Wednesday February 22 Noon and 7 p.m.
Worship God blesses us with opportunities for growth and change. Lent is one such opportunity. Ash Wednesday, February 22, begins our 40 day journey to the cross and beyond.
The “imposition of ashes” on Ash Wednesday is a reminder of Jesus’ death on a cross, and a sign of mourning and repentance. As the ashes are “imposed” on our foreheads, we are told “you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” This ritual marks the beginning of a special time of introspection and self-denial, and meditation on the promise of resurrection, as God’s response to sin and death. The focus of Lent should be not only on human sin, but also on God’s desire for the creative transformation of our embodied lives and of the whole creation.
Please join us either at noon or 7:00 p.m. for worship.
Trinity’s Seniors
On Thursday, February 9 at 1 p.m. our Sages (Senior Adults Going Everywhere Sharing) will screen the academy award nominated film “The Help” over coffee and goodies. All are welcome
Healing Service offered February 12
During our February 12 Sunday worship we’ll include opportunities for individuals to come forward and have hands laid on and prayers said for healing. We believe that healing is God’s work and occurs in different ways. Please join us as we come together as a praying community.
Soup Suppers
Soup suppers are a favorite weekly tradition for many Trinity members. Each week 2-3 individuals or families host the supper by providing pots of soup. Others are asked to bring simple foods to supplement the meal, such as fruit or bread. To keep set-up and clean-up simple, we ask that you also bring your own bowls, silverware, cups and beverages. Hosts provide coffee and tea. Soup suppers will begin at 6:15 PM prior to each 7:00PM Lenten midweek service, February 29, March 7, 14, 21 and 28. A signup sheet is posted in Larson Hall.
Come celebrate Fat, or Shrove Tuesday, February 21!
There are two names associated with the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday – “Shrove” and “Fat”. Some call it Shrove Tuesday, taken from an old English verb which means to obtain absolution for one's sins by way of Confession and doing penance. Fat Tuesday refers to the tradition of eating pancakes or other fatty foods the day before Lent begins, thus removing those treats from our houses and our diets.
This year Trinity will celebrate Fat Tuesday with a pancake supper, serving from 6 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21. Pastor Rich will use a special buttermilk pancake recipe which you won’t want to miss. We’ll also share sausage, fruit and drinks. A free will offering will be taken, with a suggested donation of $4 per person, with a maximum of $12 per family. All are also encouraged to bring “church friendly” jokes to share, as well as the popular “In it to Win it” games shared last year by Ken Endress. Sign up in Larson Hall so we can plan for how much food to bring.
Loose offerings collected each Sunday are given to a special ministry beyond the walls of our church.Designated for PADS
This means that if you have loose offering which you would like to designate to the general ministry of the church, you will need to place that in a pew envelope. Loose checks made out to Trinity will also go towards our general ministry. All other loose offering will go towards the designated outside ministry.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!
Knitting for Our Troops in Iraq Gladys Piat is knitting helmet liners for the soldier’s stationed in Iraq. I am hoping to have her pattern posted in Larson Hall by the time you read this article. The materials needed are black, 4-ply, 100% wool only. Paton’s Brand name Merino wool works up very well and is available at Michael’s and Jo-Ann Fabrics. The average cost per skein is $4.99.
I am still in need of squares, knitted or crocheted in any type and any color of yarn. When assembled, these squares will be stitched together and become afghans for donation to the Warm Up America organization. Each square should measure 7” X 9”. The directions were in the November 2007 Newsletter – cast on 35 stitches on size 8 needles and away you go!
I haven’t seen any or heard about any Prayer Shawls coming in. With the onset of cold weather and the holiday hustle and bustle being over, it’s a good time to knit your way to happiness.
Ladies (and gentlemen), are you up for another Knitter’s & Crocheter’s Luncheon? This time we can bring a dish to share and the main course will be provided. If you are interested, contact me. Be sure to bring at least one project that you are working on. If anyone needs a ride to church, please let me know that too. — Happy Valentine’s Day! Liga

Osteoporosis Medications:
Possible Health Risk A warning from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has reported a possible risk associated with drugs prescribed for osteoporosis. Current data indicates a rare type of fracture of the thigh bone has been occurring in patients taking the drugs.
The drugs under study are: Actonel, Boniva, and Fosamax. If you are currently taking one of these drugs, do NOT stop taking them without consulting your physician!
Several years ago while I was taking one of these drugs, I read a somewhat similar article in a Nursing Journal. I spoke to my doctor about it, and he reluctantly prescribed calcium supplements and Fish Oil Capsules which I continue to take on a daily basis. Together with a healthy diet, exercise, and milk with each meal, and frequent ice cream, just to make sure, I’m doing o.k.
For more information, visit www.fda.gov and search for “Bisphosphonates.”

SIMPLY GIVING
Would you find it helpful to have your offerings taken from you bank account as you do other monthly drafts? At no cost to the congregation? Lutheran Brotherhood sponsors a program called Simply Giving which offers this service for people who wish to have offerings transferred electronically into their church's account. The Trinity United Church Council has approved this program for those who choose to participate in it. Contact the church office for more detail

Sundays after the Epiphany: Green is used for its symbolism of our growth in Christ. Green, in a sense, is a "neutral color," used when more festive or more somber color is not appointed.
Ash Wednesday: Black is the preferred color, since it is the color of the ashes to which we will all return. Purple is the alternate color for this first day of Lent.
Lent: Purple is indicated, as the stark color of repentance and solemnity
